A Tasting from Down Under: A Few Great Australian Finds
Australia has continued to improve its status as a premier wine producing nation. With signature varietals and large differences in growing climates, Australia has advanced its various wineries into positions of high regard. And, like other New World wines, there are still some tremendous deals for Australian wines. Today (Tuesday, October 11) at an event hosted by Michael Skurnik, we tasted a few great bottles. Below are some of our favorites:

Marquis Philips Shiraz South Eastern Australia Marquis Philips is one of the easier labels to find these days. And, the Australians have been making exceptional Shiraz for some time - Making the Marquis Philips Shiraz one of top ambassadors of Australian wine in the U.S. It is a great ambassador! The wine is a smooth shiraz that seems to have some aging potential. It is a rich wine, with hints of blackberry and toast. At around $15 a bottle, this is a tremendous value. |

Henry’s Drive Shiraz Wine Spectator gave Henry’s Drive Shiraz 90 points last year. I first noticed licorice in the aroma, which I also noticed in the taste. There were dark fruit flavors, cherry and berry. And, like many a shiraz, the sweet melds with the spicy in a smooth finish. This shiraz is well worth the few extra dollars it costs. |

Brothers in Arms Blend 6 Another great Australian shiraz cabernet at a perfect price point. Licorice dominates the nose, but the taste has a hint of mint. There are also deep chocolate and currant flavors that melt in your mouth. The blend of Cabernet and Shiraz creates a well-structured wine and fun to drink. |
